Rare Lionel #2625/2627/2628 PENNSYLVANIA Heavyweight Passenger Cars

These are the #2625 Irvington, #2627 Madison and #2628 Manhattan Heavyweight Passenger Cars that Lionel made circa 1950/51. This is the very rare grouping with gold "Pennsylvania" Lettering. As we noted in our Guide to Lionel Trains, Volume V, Rare and Unusual, these samples were "decorated with yellow decals over heat-stamped markings and included the Pennsylvania road name, this scheme was never put into production. . . some originally sold over-the-counter at Madison Hardware in the early 1950s. We believe these items were legitimately produced at the Lionel factory." Since we wrote the Book, we have auctioned several cars over the past six years. This is only the third complete set of three cars that have been on the market in recent years. Some collectors have thought that these cars "might" have been decaled at Madison Hardware in the 1950s. Our deceased friend Harry Lovelock, who spent years researching this matter, firmly believed they came from the Lionel Factory. One frame is slighly later than the other two and may have been replaced. Our Opinion is that they are generally in Like New Minus Condition. No Boxes. All Original in our Opinion as stated.
